NYPD Officer/Martial Arts Instructor Pleads Guilty
to Transporting Minors Across State Lines for Illegal Sex
LEV L. DASSIN, the Acting United States Attorney for the
Southern District of New York, announced that TRENT YOUNG, 41, a
New York City police officer, pled guilty yesterday afternoon
before United States District Judge KENNETH M. KARAS in federal
court in White Plains, New York, to transporting three different
minors across state lines for purposes of engaging in illegal
sexual activity.
According to the Indictment to which YOUNG pled guilty
and statements made in filings and Court proceedings:
Around April 2003, YOUNG drove a 14-year-old minor from
her home in Brooklyn, New York, to his home in Middletown,
traveling through New Jersey, and engaged in sexual intercourse
with her. In spring 2006, YOUNG, who operated a martial arts studio
in his home in Middletown, New York, opened “Iron Tiger Martial
Arts,” a martial arts studio in West Milford, New Jersey. Around
October or November 2006, Young brought a 14-year-old minor from
Middletown to Iron Tiger and engaged in sexual intercourse with
her. Around November or December 2006, Young brought a second
minor, who was then 16 years old, to Iron Tiger and engaged in
sexual intercourse with her as well.
In his plea of guilty to Counts One, Five and Six of the
Indictment (covering each victim), YOUNG admitted that he
transported each of the three minors across state lines for the
purpose of engaging in sexual activity and that, after transporting
the minors across state lines, he engaged in sexual intercourse
with them. He also admitted that he exercised supervisory control
over each of the three minors.
YOUNG faces a maximum term of 30 years’ imprisonment and
a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years on Count Six of the Indictment, and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and
a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 10 years on each of
the other two counts, which took place after Congress imposed more
stringent penalties for this offense. Sentencing is scheduled for
January 15, 2010, before Judge KARAS. YOUNG has been detained
without bail since his arrest in January 2008.
Mr. DASSIN praised the efforts and assistance of the FBI,
the Middletown Police Department, the Orange County District
Attorney’s Office, the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department, the
West Milford, New Jersey, Police Department, and the Passaic County
Prosecutor’s Office.
Assistant United States Attorneys MARCIA S. COHEN and
JASON P.W. HALPERIN are in charge of the prosecution.
